Allen Itz, a Texan, holds himself to writing a poem every day. Having to produce a poem every morning, he needs material, and has had to become an acute observer of his world--of the scene around him, the people wandering on and off stage, and of his own soul. Readers who think that poetry is not for them, should take a look at Itz's work.

In some of his work, he looks at himself as a 'tiny bit of carbon base in a vastness we can quantify but not imagine,' a blip in the eye of whoever set all creation going. But in other poems we find him writing about the writing process, about sitting in a diner, as is his wont every morning, watching people, writing about them. He expertly zooms in for closeups, and then out again for a panoramic shot.

Some of these poems will make you laugh, such as one called 'Apathy,' which he ends with: "I'd write a poem about it, but I just don't give a **** anymore." In 'A Doubter's Prayer,' he begins with: "Dear, most unlikely/heavenly father/God of fear and weak/minds hear my prayer." His poems pulse with the paradox of wanting to believe, but being unable to. He leaves you with no doubts about this doubter. Itz's writing is vivid and sometimes ascerbic. In "Crackpots of the World Unite," he describes a group of good old boys which meets at the same diner, ". . . religious fundamentalis/who confuse speaking in tongues/with thinking in circles." Itz does not think in circles. Both the lover of poetry and the reader who has always thought that poetry wasn't for him will enjoy this collection of Allen Itz's delightful, thought-provoking work.

Always to the Light eBook Allen Itz Reviews

I give books I love a negative rating becuase I know how yr mind (meaning brain) works- Itz is actually one of Texas' finest writers- his somewhat prosy poems always contain meaning- and you should see his photographs. Many of the poems in this book appeared in his e zine- "Here and Now"- check it out!!!
